The Loltún Caves, a stunning natural attraction in the hilly Puuc region, has been fitted with new lights, fiber optics and new audio/video equipment.

All the better to show off its pre-historic cave paintings, which are attributed to the Maya civilization from the Late Preclassic Era, and to improve safety for visitors.

Between state and federal agencies, more than 24.5 million pesos were spent on the modernization work.

Energy-efficient LED lights have been discreetly positioned for visual impact and safety, said Saúl Ancona Salazar, leader of the Ministry of Tourism Promotion.

These are the largest caverns on the peninsula. Tours of the caves, which covers approximately 1.3 kilometers, last one hour on average. They are about 66 miles south of Mérida, and five miles south of Oxkutzcab.

A special feature here are the columns that ring like bells with when struck with your hands. There are cathedral-like underground spaces, dry riverbeds, and beautiful glittering stalagmites. Tour guides must accompany visitors for a negotiated gratuity.
