If you’re driving across the Peninsula, you may soon have to re-set your watch.
Quintana Roo will break from the time zone followed by the rest of the Yucatán Peninsula under a bill that is the federal Chamber of Deputies has left on the President’s desk.
While Yucatán and Campeche state are on the U.S. equivalent of Central Time, Quintana Roo would move up an hour, aligning it with Eastern Time.
Affecting destinations such as Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulúm, the Southeastern Time Zone is intended to take advantage of more daylight in wintertime. Competing tourist destinations such as the Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica and Puerto Rico are already on Eastern Time.
Moreover, significant energy savings are expected at the Cancún and Cozumel airports as a result.
The change requires only presidential approval.
The proposal was approved by the Mexican Senate in 2012 but was tabled after being met with strong opposition by local politicians.
