Mérida, Yucatán — A group of neighbors and three firemen worked together for a tense four hours Sunday to free a pregnant cat that somehow got herself stuck between two cement walls in Santiago.

Cy Bor, an expat from the United States, reports that the cat somehow was trapped in a narrow space where four houses meet.

“She somehow fell into the narrow space between the walls and then got further wedged in a hole between rebar in one of the walls down there,” said Cy. “Her pregnant belly prevented her from squeezing her way back out of the tight space.”

The rescue comes as the city has campaigned to spread a message of compassion and kindness toward animals

Workers used drills to get access to the cat, but all the while, the kitty was covered with cloth to prevent debris from hurting her. The men gently spoke to her the entire time, reports Cy.

Neighbors were first alerted by the sounds of a distressed cat they assumed was roaming free, in heat. Thinking back to when they first heard cries, Cy estimates the cat was trapped for more than 10 hours.

“In retrospect, we should have paid a bit more attention to our cat who was very upset by the cat’s cries for help,” says Cy. “She’s now on her way to Evolución Animal Sanctuary. Hopefully she’ll find a new human to love her.”
