After 49 days of work, the auditorium of the Olimpo Cultural Center is a little more plush, as promised.

Aside from the more comfortable seats, municipal, state and federal funding supplied new sound systems, LED lighting and air conditioning for the auditorium and three art galleries.

The National Council for the Arts, or Conaculta, a year ago announced 2 million pesos were authorized through the state’s Program for Cultural Infrastructure (Paice). The city kicked in an additional 700,000 pesos to fund the overhaul.

Fodors calls the Olimpo “the best venue in town for free cultural events.” Built adjacent to City Hall, facing the Plaza Grande, in 1999, its “marble interior is a showcase for top international art exhibits, classical-music concerts, conferences, and theater and dance performances.” An adjoining 1950s-style movie house shows classic art films by directors such as Buñuel, Fellini, and Kazan, and a planetarium with 90-minute shows educates visitors about the solar system.

The planetarium and video hall have yet to be renovated. This may be a challenge to the new city administration that comes into power Sept. 1.
