Mérida, Yucatán — To adapt to the growing presence of private planes landing at the Mérida International Airport, Grupo ASUR has built a new 60-million-peso private aviation terminal.

It was unveiled yesterday to the media with a priest’s ceremonial blessing and a tour.

The addition upgrades the airport to the level of the terminals of Cancun, Monterrey and Los Cabos in terms of facilities for private aviation, reports Diario de Yucatán. Passengers arriving in private planes will enjoy special service when the airport deals with documentation, luggage and immigration and customs review.

The two-story terminal is equipped with the latest in security systems and creature comforts for both passengers and crew, the airport’s managers said.

Airport administrator Oscar Carrillo Maldonado said that private aviation has increased considerably. Of all traffic at the airport, 35 percent is private aviation, an average of 40 flights a day. Sixty private planes are housed at the airport’s facilities.

“Not all airports have an executive terminal,” he said.
