Mérida, Yucatán — A few days after the arrival of the summer holidays, the city has emerged as the fastest growing tour-package destination.

It leads other top-ranked cities such as Guadalajara, Ixtapa and Cabo San Lucas, according to travel company Despegar, the largest travel agency in Latin America.

A busy Easter season predicts a healthy summer for domestic tour operators, the agency said. Semana Santa was good to Mérida and its coastal communities, which tracked a 72 percent increase over the previous year’s bookings.

The report was issued by Despegar, which was created in 1999 and has a presence in 21 countries.

“The way Mexicans plan trips is changing, because tourists are looking for packages, and are reserving up to three months in advance, most likely because of the current economic situation,” said Francisco Ceballos, manager of Despegar México.
