Mérida gathering in solidarity with the Women’s March

Womens marchMérida, Yucatán — In the spirit of democracy, honor, dignity and social justice, a “group of concerned citizens” have organized a gathering to show solidarity with the Women’s March on Washington.

The march is timed to coincide with U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump’s inauguration weekend. An estimated 200,000 women are expected to participate the day after Trump is sworn in.

But in Yucatán, where many U.S. expats reside, an outlet has been created for people who wish to lend their voices to the march.

The gathering is noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at Hennessy’s Irish Pub, Paseo de Montejo, No. 486A , between Calle 41 and Calle 43.

“The event will be positive and non-partisan – criticism or support for any specific politicians or political parties, of any country, is not part our agenda,” the organizers announced.

Women's March“We will be making a banner, so bring your felt markers and take the opportunity to write a personal message in support of peace, fraternity, and solidarity with marginalized groups, especially Mexicans living outside their country. At the close of the event, we will hang the banner so that all can understand how we feel.”

In explaining their point of view, the organizers added:

“We hope this gathering will be a step towards unifying our city’s diverse communities, and creating new relationships. Women need to have parity and equality at all levels of society. Immigrants need to be treated with fairness and respect. Young people need to feel hopeful about their future. All children have the right to education and loving support. Seniors need to feel safe and protected. No one should be subjected to violence or intolerance because of ethnicity, socio-economic standing, political views or religion.”
