Our mind is on Cuba these days. This year has seen a Cuban-infused Maya festival, a visit from Raúl Castro, and now a collective exhibition of Cuban artists at the newly expanded SoHo Galleries in the Santa Ana neighborhood of Mérida’s historic center.
“Landscapes of the Soul” contains contemporary interpretations of landscapes by five artists from Cuba. Each artist possesses their own distinct creative style.
On view are abstracts by Julia Valdéz Borrero, Impressionist work by Carlos Alberto Casanova, drawings by Edgar Yero and primitives by Roberto Guerra Hechavarria.
Also included, ceramics from guest artist Jorge Jacas Vivanco, who has been honored nationally and internationally as one of the most outstanding contemporary ceramicists of Cuba. Jacas will be present at the official public opening, 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, to talk about his work.
For these contemporary artists, the show represents their first time exhibiting in Merida.
“Landscapes of the Soul” will officially inaugurate SoHo’s new 2nd-floor gallery space, as well.
The gallery, a Santa Ana mainstay since 2008, is at Calle 60, between 41 and 43.
