The city has released photos of the building where up to 80 Centro street vendors are being welcomed in an effort to clear the sidewalks.

The building is due to be open in about a month at busy Calle 61 between 54 and 56, a few blocks east of the Plaza Grande. It is being fitted with shutters, iron railings, as well as sanitary and electrical upgrades. And a big incentive to lure street vendors, aside from shelter from the elements: A daycare center for children of the vendors, many of whom are mothers supporting their family.

Mayor Renán Barrera Concha toured the rehabilitation work accompanied by the president of the Board for the Preservation of Historic Center, Raymundo Vargas Leon; as well as various business and labor leaders.

The project has continued despite large municipal budget cuts. It represents an investment of over 4 million pesos. The building occupies 1,308.15 square meters, has parking for 14 vehicles and has a garden area of 98.5 square meters
