Toronto — Interjet Airlines, the so-called “JetBlue of Mexico,” celebrated with cake and plenty of fanfare Friday morning as it launched its new nonstop service to Mexico City and Cancun.
Four flights a week will link Toronto and Mexico onboard Airbus A320 aircraft, which seats 150 passengers. Roundtrip fares to Cancun start at $409; $499 to Mexico City.
Calling Canada “a natural market” for the airline, an Interjet spokesman said that Interjet is bucking an industry trend by “offering the biggest Economy cabin you can find.”
Interjet’s Economy class includes bar service, approximately 20 percent lower airfares and no luggage fees. They also allow surfers to carry their boards without a luggage fee, which makes them popular in that community, according to a blog at Pro-Lite.
“We always respect the passenger – that is our key ingredient as to what we have to offer,” added Andres Martinez Reynoso, marketing and public relations director at Interjet. “The Canadian trade market is important to us.”
The young airline first announced its intention to fly to Canada on May 15.
Interjet flies between several cities in Mexico as well as to Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Peru, and the U.S. from its bases in Cancún, Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey.
