Mérida, Yucatán — A man who police suspect vandalized several walls in the historic center was nabbed yesterday after being cornered at the Teatro José Peón Contreras.
The young man, known as Marco Antonio C. T., used thick black marker to deface walls on four different properties, municipal police said.
Witnesses called officials when the bearded individual was caught in the act on Calle 64 between 59 and 57, in the Santiago neighborhood.
Searching the area, they then reportedly caught the “artist” around the corner, on Calle 57, attacking the walls of SIEPAC offices and a cafeteria.
They chased him to the Teatro José Peón Contreras, on Calle 59 and Calle 60, where the suspect attempted to elude capture by scaling scaffolding, reaching the ceiling. That is where police say that, at 4:10 p.m., they apprehended the suspect, who according to media reports is still being detained.
Police note that the suspect has been linked to vandalism on the theater’s historic walls, as well. A black marker consistent with the graffiti was found in his possession.
Antonio C. T.’s case was referred to the state attorney general’s office.
