Progreso, Yucatán —  Encouraging weather forecasts have merchants upbeat about the arrival of cruise ships on two consecutive days this week.

Weather that’s less than picture-perfect can keep tourists from disembarking, or on a tour bus that speeds out of town, past gift shops and beach bars, for an excursion to the Mayan ruins. But when the weather’s good, more of them tend to stay on the beach and spend money along the Malecón.

And as it happens, according to the latest forecasts from the National Weather Service, conditions in Yucatán will remain mild when the tourists are here.

The Carnival Elation arrives tomorrow from Cozumel, Quintana Roo, and the Carnival Triumph pulls up to port on Wednesday, directly from its home port of Galveston, Texas.

The arrival of the Triumph is what has merchants most excited, and not just because it’s the bigger ship.

The real reason? Coming from Cozumel, many visitors tend to feel financially tapped out, and still physically recovering from all the fun they had. But when Progreso is first on the itinerary, as it is with the Triumph, tourists have fatter wallets and more energy to spend it.
