Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The municipal jail was the scene of a wedding between two of its occupants yesterday. The ceremony was conducted by the director of the Civil Registry and witnessed by several fellow inmates.

Gabriel and Raul — no last names were given in a news story by Sipse — joined their lives in prison facilities after being declared “husband and wife.”

Gay weddings began on the Riviera Maya in 2014, and obviously not all of them are held at beach resorts. This is the first time vows have been exchanged behind bars.

In 2016, the Civil Registry in Quintana Roo officiated same-sex nuptials once a week on average.
