Mérida, Yucatán — The child of a same-sex couple was recognized as their legitimate son in the Yucatán state civil registry, a historic first.
The couple, whose names were listed by rights group Indignación as Karla and Lorena, registered in the Fifth District Court on June 26, according to human rights group Indignación
Karla and Lorena were married in Yucatan on Jan. 4, 2014 after prevailing in a court judgment. Later they decided to have a child. Days after Karla gave birth, they jointly sought official recognition as baby Karlo’s mother. Although initially rebuffed, the couple is now registered as mom and mom.
On June 8, a Fifth District judge decided to grant protection to Karla and Lorena on the grounds that the earlier decision violated the Karlo’s right to a name, nationality and filiation — the fact of being designated the child of a particular parent or parents.
“I’m excited, happy, and that Lorena has the same right that I be a mother of Karlo, and to raise him together as moms,” said Karla.
