Rome is a new destination for travelers at the Mérida airport.
State authorities are already in Italy this month as part of the World Expo in Milan. This month is Yucatán’s turn at the Mexico pavilion, and officials from the governor’s office were there to talk up tourism.
It was worth the trip. The Italian airline Blue Panorama, which already delivers Mérida-Milan flights, announced it will offer Milan-Havana-Mérida and Rome-Havana-Mérida routes in December, with the Cuban capital replacing Cancun on the return trip from Milan, which had already linked up with the peninsula.
While Yucatán lobbied for this connection to bring in tourists from Europe, it also spells opportunity for Yucatecan tourists. The route will be of special interest to the faithful flier as it coincides with the Vatican’s Jubilee Year, which begins Dec. 5.
Yucatán is connected to the two major airports in Italy and, by extension, Europe.
Rome’s airport has the largest network of connections between Italy and the rest of Europe, as well as the Middle East.
Milan International Airport is the largest of the nation in terms of global flights and is the primary entry point for air cargo. Its traffic exceeds 20 million passengers a year.
