Motul, Yucatán — This city’s gift to the culinary world is being celebrated again for the second edition of the Huevos Motuleños Fair.
The fair begins 9 p.m. Friday, July 14 with a show on the esplanade of the civic plaza and a video mapping presentation on the San Juan Bautista church’s walls. The Sonora Yucateca Orchestra will accompany folk dancers..
Attendees will also enjoy a comedy show in front of the Municipal Palace, performed by the comedian Nani Namu.
On Saturday and Sunday, diners can enjoy Motuleño eggs from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., all while watching folkloric performances.
Huevos Motuleños is a breakfast favorite in Yucatán. They’re described as “layered ‘short-stack’ of Mexican breakfast favorites piled on a tortilla, including fried eggs, chorizo, cheese, peas, beans, plantains, cilantro and salsa.” Those are the words of Rick Bayless, host of public television’s “Mexico, One Plate at a Time,” which devoted an entire season to Yucatán in 2016.
The famous dish has been traced to the Siqueff family, Motul’s La Sin Rival restaurant, which was opened in the 1930s by a Lebanese immigrant, Jorge Siqueff Febles.
