Mérida, Yucatán — As the Day of the Dead approaches, cemeteries in Merida come alive.
Many families traditionally celebrate the season by painting the grave markers of their loved ones.
This custom is noticeable in the General Cemetery and the Xoclán Cemetery, reports Diario de Yucatán. Yesterday families spent time cleaning and painting the final resting places of their loved ones, waiting for the arrival of their souls to this earthly plane, as tradition dictates.
For Dia de Muertos, the Secretary of Public Security takes control of the roads at the General and Xoclán cemeteries.
In Xoclán, motorists will use the Poniente entrance for private vehicles and the main entrance will only serve for the arrival of public transport. In the General Cemetery, the vehicles will travel from North to South on Calle 66, turn at 81 to 81-A and enter through the main gate.
On Thursday, Nov. 2, at 10 a.m. the Archbishop of Yucatan, Monsignor Gustavo Rodríguez Vega, will officiate Mass at Xoclán, and then at the General Cemetery at 11.
Municipal cleaning, maintenance and fumigation crews also looked after city cemeteries, where they painted sidewalks and garrisons, washed pathways, removed debris and pruned trees.
