A brief “heads up” on a few of the contemporary dance performances this week: As you may have seen in the newspaper, the 20th Anniversary Festival of International and National Contemporary Dance runs through today. A friend in Guadalajara emailed me about an extraordinary Belgian company he saw there, so I think this Merida format may be part of a larger, Mexico-wide festival.

I know, I know, several of you have either house guests or are knee-deep in house issues of one sort or another. Just doing my bit to further our collective, shared role as Merida’s “Cultural Ambassadors” to the expat community! Certainly, what with Noche Blanca and everything else, we here in Merida risk being buried in a surfeit of arts and culture this week, especially this weekend!

However, just in case you have any extra time, energy and interest, the full dance performance schedule is available on www.culturayucatan.com.

Tumàka’t, known to many of you already, is an innovative and athletic company from here in Merida. The performance is 5 p.m. today at Teatro Daniel Ayala. Vania Duran, artistic director for Tumàka’t, will give a short, casual talk about her piece in the lobby after the show.

I’m sure we’ll all be bumping into each other all over the place this weekend — and for those of you who haven’t made it over there yet, plan on stopping by Botella Verde (noon – 9-ish, corner of Parque Santa Lucia adjacent to the chocolate shop) for lunch, dinner and all kinds of delicious light bites and snacks to re-energize you amidst all that house painting, shopping and culture!
