Mérida, Yucatán — The Centro’s notoriously difficult sidewalks are getting better and better, block by block.
César Bojórquez Zapata, the city’s general coordinator of urban functioning, reported that repair work on Calle 59 between 60 and 62 will conclude Saturday. That is the stretch where Pancho’s restaurant and a Dante bookstore do business.
Work there follows the facade rescue program, which intervened in 10 sites on the north side and three on the south side of that busy block. Officials wanted the sidewalks to compare favorably with the renovated walls and cornices.
After obtaining the authorization from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), work was carried out at night to avoid blocking traffic.
The renovation included ramps for the disabled.
Zapata Bojórquez also reported that a census of utility grates, poles and cables is complete. The electric, water and cable utilities will work with the city to fix or refine all the obstacles they have put in pedestrians’ paths along the first nine blocks of the Historic Center: from Calle 59 to 65 and from Calle 58 to 64.
The city’s Permanent Maintenance Program of the Historic Center began in October 2016 with an initial investment of 500,000 pesos, which doesn’t include the 1.9 million pesos allocated for paving.
The program also includes constant attention to sidewalks and parks, power washing twice a week at the Plaza Grande.
