Mérida, Yucatán — State officials announced Wednesday the construction of Museo Casa Maya, a replica of a traditional Mayan house which will demonstrate how the indigenous people have lived in harmony with their surroundings for thousands of years.
They say it will be the smallest museum on the world.
This museum will be located in the jardín de los vestigios alongside the current offices of the Agency for Fiscal Administration Yucatan (AAFY), between the Siglo XXI Convention Center and the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya de Mérida.
Its 700,000-peso budget will be split between the state and the National Council for Culture and Arts (CONACULTA).
According to press release, this unprecedented project will seek to highlight the connection between the Maya and nature, celebrating their knowledge of the stars and the land. Helping convey this message will be 21st-century touch-screen panels to explain Mayan’s deep understanding of construction and agriculture, handed down for generations.
An opening date was not announced.
