Celebrating its eighth anniversary, Merida’s Bic-Ruta is sprouting out, extending north to Club Campestre and south to the Panteón General, said organizer Mayra Nah.
To mark the occasion, municipal authorities held a party yesterday, bringing 3,000 people for raffles and prizes at Remate, the southern base of the Paseo de Montejo, where the Sunday-morning mass bike rides take place as a community event.
Nah said the growth of the route was by popular demand, with the weekly event’s participation growing about 30 percent this year and double 2012’s numbers. About 2,000-3,000 participants take part each week, she estimates.
The Bici-Ruta does more than close down streets to motor vehicles to allow bikes, or joggers, rollerbladers, etc., a makeshift linear park. The city sets up hydration stations (they hand out water) and offers live music, volleyball, football and children’s shows along the way.
