For at least the second time this year, a widespread outage brought down phone and internet communications throughout Yucatán and neighboring states.

The Telcel and Telmex outage affected not only ordinary users, but crippled emergency services like 066, which should reach the police, and 065, which connects to the Red Cross.

Service was cut around 10 a.m. yesterday, and wasn’t restored until 5 p.m. The episode echoes an outage in early February, and was caused by a similar mishap: a line was accidentally by a utility worker. It wasn’t clear who the worker reports to, although Telmex said it was a federal third-party contractor who will face legal action from the carrier.

Mario Can Marín, the leader of the National Chamber of Industry (Canacintra), said the vulnerability of Telmex and Telcel lines are troubling for businesses throughout Southeast Mexico, and have resulted in quantifiable economic losses.

The outages also affected parts of Tabasco, Campeche and Quintana Roo.
