Mérida, Yucatán — The ancient Maya ball game, normally played as a reenactment for tourists, will get very real on Saturday.
Yucatán will host the First Peninsular Grand Cup Pok ta Pok with the participation of four teams vying for the World Cup, which will take place in September.
Equipos de Opichén, Chapab, Playa del Carmen abd Tihosuco will compete 9 a..m. Saturday at basketball court No. 1 in the Kukulcan Sports Complex.

The World Cup itself will be played at Chichen Itza, where the ancient ball court attracts thousands of tourists each year.
The ancient Maya played with teams of seven members, but Saturday’s race will host four players.
