More and better options for tourism and business is riding along with the additional flights that have been steadily building on Mérida’s twin runways.
Growth at Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport amounts to 21,000 additional seats this year, said tourism minister Saúl Ancona Salazar.
A big part of that growth can be attributed to Mérida’s latest international links. Where the Mérida airport once flew international passengers only to Miami and Houston, today it can offer flights to Milan, Toronto, Belize, Havana and Dallas.
But its bread and butter is national connectivity to cities like Monterrey, Guadalajara, Oaxaca, Villahermosa, Veracruz, Chiapas and Quintana Roo.
“This represents a wide range of opportunities for new customers and businesses, and puts on the table opportunities that did not exist years ago,” Ancona said.
The state official said that through digital promotion strategies and public relations, as well as the signing of agreements with strategic partners, Yucatán has became a preferred — and fashionable — tourist destination.
“So we must take advantage of this air connectivity representing business opportunities for all productive sectors of Yucatan, not only for tourism,” he said.
Ancona Salazar noted that this growth in airplane seats represents a challenge to entrepreneurs to sell Yucatan as fashionable and business-friendly destination.
Earlier this month, when the Robb Report Luxury Newswire, listed five reasons to visit Yucatán this summer, the No. 1 reason was the airport.
Getting to the capital city, Mérida, has become even easier thanks to extended service by the American Airlines and United Airlines networks. Recently, American Airlines launched a new route into Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport (MID) from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), which operates five flights per week via an Airbus 319 aircraft. Additionally, United Airlines has recently increased its summer service (June – August) into MID with daily non-stop service from Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) via a Boeing 737-700 aircraft. These new flight options open numerous connections to Mérida from the extensive American Airlines and United Airlines networks.
