Aeroméxico’s flights to Miami may end, but Atlanta route still planned

Mérida, Yucatán —After 30 years, Aeroméxico is considering dropping its flights to Miami, tourism secretary Saul Ancona Salazar confirmed.

The link has not proven profitable for the airline, he said.

Aeroméxico was adding flights to the Florida hub as late as 2014, but now may ditch the connection entirely. The airline has a code-share agreement with Atlanta-based Delta, so its flights to Miami present a reasonable travel options for passengers hugging the East Coast.

“It is a decision of profitability and competitiveness, it is an exclusive issue of Aeroméxico,” the secretary told Diario de Yucatán.

Aeromexico has flown from Mérida to Miami for more than 30 years, but faced competition from American Airlines, which introduced the same route in May.

“We do not lose connectivity with Miami if it were to withdraw,” reiterated the secretary.

Another common flight between the Yucatecan capital and the U.S. is United Airlines’ Houston route, which flies five times a week.

Delta and Aeroméxico are still resuming a long-gone Mérida-Atlanta flight on Dec. 1, he confirmed. Atlanta is another important U.S. hub that would link easily to hundreds of other major destinations.

For now, Aeroméxico is taking reservations online for the Mérida-Miami route until February.

“They still have not made a final decision; if they do well in December, January and February, things could change,” he said.

On the possible return of the Blue Panorama’s flights to Milan, Ancona Salazar said that the airline is evaluating a possible return in the 2018 summer vacation season.
