Mérida, Yucatán — The colorful port of Campeche will be the inaugural destination under a program that takes travelers to the homes and studios of AANY artists and craftspeople throughout the Yucatán Peninsula.
While supporting the Amigos Artistas/Artesanos Nuevos de Yucatán and economically benefitting local communities, the AANY ARTOURS series will offer travelers the opportunity to view and acquire original works of art where the creators live and work.
Tours will be professionally arranged and escorted, and proceeds benefit AANY A.C., a certified Mexican non-profit organization based in Mérida.
“The prospect of developing a series of day/weekend trips for AANY has me very, very excited and I think we can make this a successful program,” said Joan Farrell, AANY founder and president.
Plans are being finalized for the inaugural expedition, a spring weekend in Campeche including a workshop tour with master bull horn carver Mario Nadal Chuc, and a sampling of Campeche’s historical sights and famous seafood. CAMPECHE TOUR APRIL 3-4
Day 1, Friday — Meet your travel companions at 9 a.m. (meeting point TBA) for an easy two-hour drive to Campeche. Our first stop is at the imposing fort of San José el Alto, overlooking the bay and protecting the city from maritime invaders since 1792. After admiring the views, we visit the workshop of artist Laura Canul Briceño, who sculpts fanciful cornhusk bouquets. A waterside lunch of fresh Campeche seafood is followed by our check-in at the five-star Plaza Colonial hotel in the historic center of the fortified city. Relax and refresh before joining the group for a sunset cocktail among the displays of the famous Bazar de Artesanías. Then take in the spectacular multimedia presentation of Campeche’s history in the main square.
Day 2, Saturday — Enjoy a morning stroll and a leisurely breakfast at the hotel before setting off to visit the studio of master bullhorn carver Mario Nadal Chuc. Watch as he transforms the raw material into exquisite works of art and purchase a treasure for yourself or a loved one. Next, a stop at Tukulná Casa de Artesanías provides another opportunity to shop for the highest quality Campeche handcrafts. Lunch and some free time precede your departure for Merida and farewell to Campeche.
