Art runs through the veins of this famous Mexican family: Juan Carlos Breceda, Argelia Rosas and their son Jorge Alberto Aguilar Rojas, or JAAR.
SoHo Galleries will have all three featured in their upcoming exhibition, “Legacy.”
Each artists’ works reflects the ties that bind them in their use of bold colors.
Breceda is one of Mexico’s most well-known artists, and his work is exhibited across the U.S., Mexico, South America and Europe. Rough brush strokes of contrasting colors, depicting depth or perspective, culminates in simple forms filled with energy.
Women and animals are the central theme in his work. One one portrait, a women’s enormous eyes, steady gaze and harsh features do not diminish her softness or sensuality. His animals? A rooster, bird or elephant convey simplicity in a real and sometimes magical world.
Argelia Rosas, who is originally from Jalisco, graduated from the ENPEG La Esmeralda. Through her paintings she transports us to magical towns with churches decorated with green, red and yellow confetti; suns and moons peer from behind colorful mountains; humble watermelons radiate life. Angelia captures the essence of Mexican traditions, the clamor of parties, with her free yet precise strokes that convey the joy and character of her Mexican heritage.
JAAR, who is only 28 years old, recently exhibited in Miami’s Art Basel. His works consist of large-scale mixed media. Bold and contemporary with a mix of abstract and figurative, his textural brush strokes represents his unique style and world view. JAAR’s emphasis on faces is an open invitation for viewers. Is the missing mouth a frown, or perhaps a smirk?
The exhibit debuts at a reception 7-10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30 at SoHo Galleries, Calle 60 x 41 y 43, Centro, Merida The exhibition will run through March 1.
