Mérida, Yucatán — Grupo Walmart will open at least four more stores in the city in the first months of next year, including one on Avenida Aviación by the airport entrance, company officials confirmed.

The three other locations were not specified, but would bring to 11 the number of Walmarts in Mérida. That doesn’t count other stores owned by the same parent company, such as the 10 Bodega Aurrerá stores, 11 Mi Bodegas Aurrerás, five Bodegas Aurrerá Express, three Sam’s Clubs and an upscale supermarket, Superama.

The projects represent an investment of at least 700 million pesos, reports Milenio Novedades.

This builds on July’s announcement of a 650-million-pesos Walmart distribution center somewhere in the state. That giant plant alone will generate more than 500 direct and 250 indirect jobs, and expand its supply network to Campeche and Quintana Roo.

That, in turn, will allow trucks to reach more places in less time, will also boost investment and attract more local suppliers, said Miguel Cavazza, vice president of logistics at Walmart in Mexico and Central America.

“Walmart de México y Centroamérica has been a pioneer in integrating logistics into its business model, looking for the best places and conditions to invest. The result is significant growth, accompanied by unprecedented productivity rates in the industry,” said Cavazza.

At the airport entrance, the 800-million-peso, 20,000-square-meter complex will also include a movie theater and a City Express hotel.
