Mérida, Yucatán — The international airport here is absorbing more foot traffic, at a rate well above the average of other Mexican airports ASUR manages.

In June, the Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport counted 156,270 domestic passengers and 16,460 international travelers, an increase of 17.6 percent and 13.3 percent respectively. Year to date, more than a million domestic and international travelers passed through the airport, up 16.3 percent compared with the same span in 2016.

Cancun, a much larger destination and ASUR’s largest airport, took in 12 million fliers, up 12.1 percent. Both airports are growing faster than the national average of 11.5 percent.

Formally known as Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste, ASUR manages nine airports in southeast Mexico: Cancun, Cozumel, Huatulco, Mérida, Minatitlan, Oaxaca, Tapachula, Veracruz and Villahermosa. It also manages the San Juan, Puerto Rico, airport in a joint venture.

Mérida is ASUR’s second-largest airport in the group and the only Mexican airport besides Cancun’s that boasts over a million travelers so far this year.
