Mérida, Yucatán — Already rosy to begin with, the outlook for hotel growth continues to get brighter.

Two years ago, forecasters expected the city to offer 12,500 hotel rooms by 2020; now that number is at 15,000 rooms by 2019.

In the next two years, more than 2.5 billion pesos will be invested by international chains, spread across 10 separate projects.

This growth represents a 29.1 percent increase in hotel rooms, said to head of the Ministry of Economic Development, Ernesto Herrera Novelo.

The new International Congress Center, due to open next March, is stimulating this growth. Most of the hotels are designed to attract business travelers here for conventions and trade shows.

Among the chains that are building in Mérida is Grupo Posada, which will add a Fiesta Inn by the new convention center, just as it did by the older Siglo XXI convention center. The Misión chain is also adding two new hotels here, adding to the one it already has in operation.

The Holiday Inn Express is hanging its shingle on the formerly pink tower in the Centro, bringing to three the number of franchises the company runs in Mérida. The Camino Real and the Marriott also will compete for bookings in the city.

In addition, the City Express, Colection and Starwoods chains are also developing projects in the capital of Yucatán.
